Treatment

For many years, the only option for gum disease treatment was invasive oral surgery which can be painful and intimidating to most patients. For over 25 years, laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is a FDA-approved alternative technique that uses the latest laser technology to treat gingivitis that has turned into periodontal or gum disease.

Its targeted approach removes the diseased tissue and tartar that form in pockets between the teeth and gums without damaging the normal tissue, producing lasting results of healthier gums and better smiles. This method can also help prevent new bacteria and tartar from forming that cause gum disease and begin the process of regenerating new tissue that then reattaches to the teeth. Dr. Feinberg is ready to work with you to create a plan to improve your dental health and help you feel and look better.

introduction to the top La Mesa dentist

“I got my teeth whitened 2 days before my wedding, and OMG, the results were outstanding! My teeth were many shades away from the pearly whites we all want because of the stains from 10 years of coffee & smoking. Thank you Dr. Feinberg for bringing out my wedding smile. Truly the best teeth whitening La Mesa has to offer!”

Am I a candidate for LANAP PerioLase MVP-7 Laser Gum Treatment?

When gingivitis is untreated, it can cause moderate to severe periodontitis with the following symptoms

  • tooth and gum pain
  • bad breath (halitosis)
  • sensitivity
  • bleeding
  • inflammation in your gums
  • tooth loss

Left untreated, gum disease has a high chance of leading to other conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, pregnancy complications, HPV, and erectile dysfunction, and carries a double risk of coronary artery disease and fatal heart attacks.

Because of its low bleeding risk, patients with diabetes and other medical conditions that cause excessive bleeding can still be good candidates for this laser dentistry treatment. Dr. Feinberg will complete a thorough evaluation of your gum and teeth health and work with you to decide if our La Mesa laser gum treatment with LANAP is the right option.

Consultation and Preparation

Seeking dental care can be complicated and overwhelming. With his personalized approach, Dr. Feinberg will use his extensive expertise with a compassionate approach to consult with you about your dental and gum disease concerns. This will include an x-ray to understand the full extent of the problem.

After a comprehensive assessment, a personalized strategy is created so that treatments can be scheduled. Two treatment appointments will be needed, approximately a week apart, and each will take approximately 2 to 3 hours. Patients can usually resume their normal daily activities immediately after.

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

For the first few days following treatment, you may notice soreness, aching, and throbbing in your gums. This is to be expected and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. You may also notice tissue discoloration as well as a difference in your bite. Your teeth will shift slightly as your gums heal and will need a series of adjustments in the months following LANAP treatment. In addition, specially-created splints may be used to help the healing process. It is important to wear the splints as directed by your dentist.

It is also important to not brush or floss for the first 7 to 10 days, follow a soft food diet, and not smoke, as it can impair the healing process. Also, regular cleanings at three-month intervals will be required for at least the first 12 months following treatment. Post-op checkups are also required at the one-week, one-month, 4-month, 7-month, 10-month, and 12-month milestones.

We will provide customized and detailed aftercare instructions, and following them will be necessary to see the best results possible.

LANAP FAQs

Because it is still a dental procedure, we use a local anesthetic to minimize or prevent any discomfort during the surgery.

There is no use of scalpels or sutures, so the risk of bleeding or complications is very minimal.

Most people who are pregnant or breastfeeding can safely undergo LANAP, but a full assessment will be completed before to ensure there are no indications for not receiving the treatment.

You will need to follow a liquid or soft food diet for several weeks, and it will be important to avoid alcohol, tobacco, and coffee for the first several days. As with any procedure, adhering to our detailed follow-up instructions helps ensure long-lasting results you’ll love.

By eliminating the bacteria between your teeth and gums, the laser procedure can help promote the growth of your own stem cells responsible for generating bone and healthy tissue.

LANAP gum treatment can have a positive impact on failing and ailing dental implants. Using light exposure methods, LANAP therapy can destroy periodontal pathogens and endotoxins while stabilizing dental implants.

You should avoid physical activity and exercise 2-3 days after each procedure.

Some insurance plans can cover some or all of the cost of LANAP treatments. Our financial coordinators will be happy to discuss specific details and guide you through checking your insurance benefits.
